While You Were Sleeping

Squirrel - Mel PetersonDistractions of mammoth proportions plague our every day lives. The constant running to and fro becomes a vicious cycle, only to be mindlessly repeated day-in and day-out.  Then life throws you a whopper, a zinger of sorts, waking you up from a long winters nap.

There's so much that you miss while you're sleeping.  The yellow leaves of a 50-year old cottonwood tree blow effortlessly in the wind.  A family of pheasants gather under a rusted-out flatbed truck, enjoying a shady reprieve from the warm desert sun. The weathered swing on the front porch has long since lost its youth, yet the memory of conversations that took place there are etched in our thoughts forever.

While you were sleeping, I gazed upon your worldly treasures. You've spent a lifetime lining every corner of your 10-acre yard with what I thought was junk.  But today, I see things differently. These are your prized possessions, a generation of one man's treasures to be preserved and cherished.  You meticulously cared for every inch of this place, so you could pass a valuable inheritance on to your children and grand-children.

While I was sleeping, you offered a generous smile and a kind word to strangers.  You took in more homeless people than I could possibly count.  And when others littered your 300 ft driveway with old couches and washing machines, you took them in too.  You saw potential in everything.  You were frugal and resourceful and you allowed nothing to go to waste.  Even the stale bread in your kitchen was offered to the birds as a happy meal.

In the blink of an eye, we were awakened to our senses.  You heard a familiar sound of a semi-truck at your gate, and you went to greet the stranger.  As I waited for your return, I wondered how many more moments I would have left with you. When you zipped around the corner with a huge smile, I proudly wiped my tears. Then, almost simultaneously, we both noticed a squirrel in the dog's bowl, quietly enjoying the leftovers.  We laughed out loud.  Even the squirrel instinctively knew that nothing should be wasted in this moment ;-)

Mel-It is amazing the everyday things we take for granted and don't even notice until something major happens in our life and all of a sudden you see things thru new eyes and a sense of renewal. I am happy you got to spend the holiday with your Dad. Cherish EVERY minute. You my friend have such a wonderful way with words and tell a most delightful story whatever it is.

For sure... Sharon! When you slow down, you notice life's simple things. It's refreshing and sweet ;)))

Tanya - There's nothing more rewarding than giving of your time to another person... It makes you both feel good ;)

I've been needing to slow down and smell the coffee more... Dawn.  My dad and I have had some special moments together these past few months ;)

Thanks Jeff!  I find inspiration in the most unlikely places ;)

If we're not careful we will miss what life offers. We need to keep our eyes and mind open.

Good luck and success.

Mel, if we thought about how much we actually sleep in years we would probably try to figure out how to sleep a lot less. Then there is the unaware, unconscious sleep walking through life. This was a very well written post with symbolism or even thinking about the squirrel.

Ahhh...thank-you Brian!  That means a lot to me... and you know how much my Pops means to me too... I'm savoring every moment.

I hear ya... Lou... and I would add one more body part to your list... the heart.

That's very sweet Kevin.... thank-you!

Frank & Karen ~ In that moment, there wasn't another thing I would've rather been doing ;)

The squirrel was the icing on the cake... Gary!  Priceless!

Mel- 'twas about your dad?  Time passes so quickly and it's too often that we open our eyes and realize that we're missing treasured moments.  Can't get them back.  You just have to jump in and live and appreciate each moment you have.

Mel, you really have a talent to express your deep feelings in such beautiful words... you are not alone, we all need to stop and enjoy the precious moments that take place in our lives everyday and sometimes go unnoticed.

Hi Mel, Sigh.....simply beautiful. Sometimes it takes us some time to wake up a bit enough to see things as others do..or appreciated those things that perhaps once annoyed us but now we understand. Time does have a way of doing that to us. I'm so glad you've been able to spend some precious time with your Dad.

What a eloquent post Mel!  The ways of looking at all things, asleep / awake, really do make all the difference.  The ability to look at something in this way can be profound, as is your post!  Nothing goes to waste and life does, on occasion, have a squirrely way of pointing that out to us!

How wonderful!  I just found you and will be subscribed immediately.  It is rare that we humans do something LARGE and LOUD that garners attention.  We are simply millions of moments gathered into one special, but small, point of light. You must slow done enough to see the light of others and for them to notice yours.
