www.LandandLatte.com: It's Okay If You Don't Feature Me

It's Okay If You Don't Feature Me

It's Okay If You Don't Feature Me.  A few weeks ago, I wrote a very personal post about a childhood friend who is dying from an incurable disease.  In an effort to help the family, and bring as much exposure to the story as I could, I reached out to the Active Rain Gods (privately) and asked for something I would never think of asking for myself... a Feature.

I care little about the Gold Star and what it represents to this community.  I've never placed any importance on earning points in a system that mimics make believe (although, I admire those who have been blogging since dinosaurs became extinct ;).  What I care about most is people, and how I can personally make a difference in the lives of others.  That has always been the benchmark for everything that I do.

I've never been one to ask for help.  Perhaps it's a bit of pride left over from my impecunious childhood, but I'd rather dumpster dive for aluminum cans than beg for assistance.  I've worked hard my entire life and I've given back tenfold.  When it comes to sharing the needs of others, I don't mind shouting it from the mountain top so the whole world can hear.

When Active Rain said they couldn't Feature my post because of a policy (it wouldn't be fair to all), I didn't take it personal.  What I did instead was something far more productive.  I created a website at www.GoFundMe.com/LarsonFamily to gather donations for my friends.  We went live with the site today and we've already collected over a thousand dollars!

It's okay if you don't feature me... but will you please consider joining me in making a financial donation to help a family in dire need?  The website  accepts donations as low as $5.00.  Just think... if 20K ActiveRainers donated $5.00 each, we would easily reach our goal of raising $100,000., making a significant difference in the lives of this family.  Call me a dreamer, but I believe anything is possible!

Click on the Larson Family Fund and donate today!  Your love, prayers and support are much appreciated!

Update as of 11/15/13... We've raised over $30K in donations for the Larson Family!  Thanks to many of you who have helped, and continue to donate to this cause!  It makes my heart happy!

Mel- I do remember that post and I know you.  Features mean nothing to you other than that it opens up an avenue for your message.   You are the friend that everyone needs.

Brenda ~ I can't even begin to tell you how touched I was by your generous donation, comment, and the re-blog!  It warms my heart to know there are special souls out there who truly care for humanity and will donate to a complete stranger!  Thank-you from the bottom of my heart sweet lady!

Mel~ I missed your first post, so I'll need to go back and read that one. I hit the suggest button on this one and plan to reblog too! Oh, and I'll visit the website and make a donation also!

Posted by Donna Foerster, Metro Denver Real Estate Assistant (HomeSmart Realty Group) about 6 years ago

Mel, The exposure alone on this site and the re-blogs will surely help your friends get to their goal. Features are a bonus here in the Rain but the people are what really matter! Your friends are lucky to have you rooting for them!

Thank for the suggest... Donna!  Apparently it worked ;-)  I appreciate everyone who's willing to take the lead and spread the word across this network of fine colleagues and friends.  Thank you for that!

I totally agree... Wanda!  The 'Feature' certainly helps to spread the word and potentially have the ability to change this family's life.

Thank you kindly Jay & Michelle!  We have so many friends, family and colleagues pulling for this family.  We've received just about $3K in less than 24 hours... an 'organic' miracle if you ask me ;)

Mel, I was going to say you are golden through and through.  But you are not.  Your incredible heart and sense of reasoning is way beyond gold.  You my friend are a red diamond.  A quality of person so rare that only a handful exist in the world.  A gold star really doesn't matter.  It is the friendship that you have that matters.  The love that you give that matters.  The going the extra mile that matters.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen to me when I was trying to help a veteran raise money for purple heart veterans.  Policy.  And I get it.  If they do it for one of us, they would have to do it for all of us and the feature board would turn into a fundraiser.

I love your "marching onward" spirit though.

I have to smile while reading this blog.  Your thoughts on points mirrors my own a little.  It's not that I don't like points, because I do!  But, they shouldn't be the primary prize when setting up personal goals.  I have my own list of things I hope to achieve.  Points are right there next to winning at "Angry Birds."  Worthy goals are what it's all about!

Mel,

This time you got your gold star.  It appears the squeaky wheel gets the grease around here.  I saw Kerrie yesterday and she was helping me fix something and she said you only have 3 features out of nearly 1400 posts?

I said yeah and she said nothing, but you could tell she was wonderign why.

I mean I may not be Mark Twain, but I think if nearly 2000 of you sometimes read my stuff, some of it must be interesting.

to Kevin's comment (#29).... Mel has 44 features (including this one) out of 703 posts.  That represents over 6% of her posts have earned the gold start... not a bad percentage!

Not sure where Kerrie (or Kevin) got their information.

Hello Friends!  First, I just want to say that I'm overwhelmed with joy from the outpouring of love and generosity from many of you who have shared here, as well as donated to the Larson Family.  We've already collected $5K in less than 24 hours of the site being live.  Once we reach $10K, we should be able to secure housing for the family in the Conejo Valley.

Your kind thoughts, reblogs and very sweet comments have touched my heart.  Thank you!!!  I plan on coming back and responding to each one of you... but for now, I'm running out the door to show property all day to some fabulous clients referred to me by Elizabeth Weintraub (thanks Elizabeth!).

Blessings ~ Mel

Hello Friends!  After a crazy whirlwind week, and feeling slightly under the weather, I'm back to give an update on the Larson Family Fund.  We've raised over $16K in less than a week (as Gayle Rich Boxman's grandma used to say... I'm quietly proud!).  Many of you have re-blogged this story and/or donated to the cause... I can't tell you how touched I am by your heartfelt love and generosity!  Thank you soooo much!!!

We've reached our first financial milestone by raising enough funds to secure a rental home for the family in the Conejo Valley.  We're hoping to move the family in the next couple of weeks.  After that, it's our goal to continue to raise money to pay for housing and basic needs for the Larson Family for 1 year.

If you feel led to join us in our efforts, you can continue to help by sharing the link (below) on your social media sites whenever you can (and of course, you can donate too!).  Thank you again for Paying It Forward and being A Community That Cares!  The Larson Family is deeply touched!

Blessings ~ Mel
